Collaborator Profile: G2 Design
Van Acker prides itself on its long-term collaborations. One is with the design firm G2, based in Marin County and headed by Gari Sprott and Gunnar Burklund. The designers met Van Acker over twenty years ago when they worked together remodeling a Belvedere Island property, giving the mid-century architecture a European ambiance and highlighting panoramic bay views. For the same client, G2 created a jewel-box apartment on Nob Hill —in the 1920s Brocklebank building designed by Weeks & Day. The team added architectural detailing and millwork to showcase art and antiques while remodeling the dated kitchen and bathrooms.
G2 and Van Acker have worked on multiple Marin projects for one client spanning the last fourteen years. It started with remodeling a hillside Spanish Colonial-styled home by the 20th-century builder Gus Costigan. Costigan helped give Mill Valley its bohemian flavor when he created the WWII-era El Paseo building complex. Once G2 and Van Acker completed the remodel, the clients commissioned new construction with Chambers + Chambers Architects on an adjacent lot. The team honored the verdant topography using organic shapes in reclaimed redwood, limestone, steel, and concrete. G2 and Van Acker followed with a third house in Stinson Beach, and they just completed another hilltop residence.
Gari, Gunnar, and Van Acker joined renowned architect Ugo Sap to build a contemporary family getaway in Healdsburg for another client. The white oak, Venetian plaster, and Vetter limestone interiors with furnishings in a neutral color palette enhance the mercurial wine country landscape while highlighting the homeowners' modern art collection. Engineered glass panels disappear into wall pockets, further blurring the interior and exterior worlds. Blasen Landscape Architecture worked with the team to incorporate natural elements into the hardscapes where three generations enjoy weekends and holidays.
Van Acker and G2 look forward to future collaborations.
